Cody and Jackson players take WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors

Teammates on the Cody Fillies softball team and the Jackson boys soccer team won Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming WyoPreps Athlete of the Week awards on May 8, 2024. Girls honors went to Cody seniors Violet Wollschlager and Riley Simone. The boys award went to Jackson senior Teddy Opler and junior Augie Hoelscher. These players have been selected based on their efforts in the week of April 29 to May 5, 2024.

The Cody Fillies went 4-0 last weekend to win the West Conference of Wyoming High School Softball for the fourth year in a row. The two seniors, Wollschlager and Simone, played key roles in the Fillies sweep of two doubleheaders. Wollschlager went 11-for-11 at the plate. She hit two home runs, three triples and two doubles. Wollschlager had 8 RBIs, scored 8 runs, had one stolen base and was hit twice by a pitch. The senior hit for the cycle against Rock Springs for a 12-2 win in game two. With first place on the line in the conference game against the Tigers last Friday, Simone pitched a 3-hit shutout in the circle. She struck out 9 and walked only 3. In four games at the plate, Simone went 8-for-15 with 3 doubles and a triple. She drove in 6 points and scored 4 points. Simone also picked up a second win in the circle against Green River.

WyoPreps spoke with the seniors on Wednesday. Wollschlager and Simone discussed their roles in the weekend sweep. Wollschlager was excited about her great weekend at the record. She described her mentality when batting, how she wanted to hit a home run against Rock Springs, her reaction to hitting for the cycle, and more. Opler and Hoelscher combined for 11 goals and three assists in the two wins. Jackson defeated their two foes by a combined score of 19-0. The Broncs improved to 13-1 on the season and 11-1 in conference play.
