Indonesia miss out on final Olympic berth after defeat to Guinea

Indonesia have come up just short in their quest for a first appearance in the men’s football tournament at the Olympics since 1956 — after losing 1-0 to Guinea on Thursday.

Having done brilliantly over the past three weeks in their maiden AFC U-23 Asian Cup campaign, Indonesia missed out on automatic qualification after finishing fourth at the tournament but still had a chance of reaching the Olympics via Thursday’s intercontinental playoff for the final berth at the Paris Games later this year.

Nevertheless, they ultimately failed to get over the line with the only goal of the game coming in the 29th minute when Ilaix Moriba coolly converted from the spot, after Algassime Bah had been brought down inside the area by Witan Sulaeman.

Guinea could have added a second when they were awarded another penalty in the 73rd minute — this time in contentious circumstances as Alfeandra Dewangga looked to have nicked the ball with his sliding challenge on Bah.

Indonesia’s fury at the spot-kick being awarded eventually led to coach Shin Tae-Yong being sent off for dissent after being shown two yellow cards in a matter of seconds.

Justice looked to have been served as Bah could only send his effort off the foot of the post, although the Indonesians were just unable to find an equalizer as Guinea held on to seal their place at the Olympics.
