‘I’ll be excited and beat him’… UFC Hall of Famer unveils backup offer for Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal boxing fight

UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen has unveiled an unusual backup offering for the upcoming boxing fight between MMA legends Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal.

The pair originally squared off in the UFC octagon for the inaugural BMF title in 2019 and will be back in the boxing ring later this summer – albeit with a significant delay.

Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal boxing fight postponed

UFC legends Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal were originally scheduled to fight at the Kia Forum in California on Saturday, June 1; however, the event has now reportedly been postponed until July 6.

As broken by Lance Pugmire of Boxing Scene, the boxing match will not only be postponed by a month, but also moved to the Honda Center in Anaheim.

As reported by Ariel Helwanithe main reason for the postponement is due to the original date of June 1, which clashed with UFC 302, headlined by lightweight champion Islam Makhachev against fan-favorite veteran Dustin Poirier.

Chael Sonnen claims he has been offered a backup role for Diaz vs Masvidal

On the latest episode of The MMA Hour, former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen claimed he was offered the role of backup fighter for the upcoming boxing fight between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal.

“I support everything Nate does, and I hate everything Jorge does,” the fan-favorite fighter teased, before sharing that an offer had indeed been made behind closed doors:

“I was contacted about this behind the scenes to be the backup fighter, but I don’t like the idea of being someone’s backup fighter. I’ve never talked about that and that’s very serious, I’m not joking right now. ”

“I don’t like that word (backup), they used a different word because there was no scenario where I would fight Nate and they knew that – so it meant that if Nate couldn’t do it, then you could do it against Masvidal record it and I said, ‘Absolutely, I will’.”

Sonnen is 47 years old and has not competed in MMA since 2019; after leaving the UFC in 2013 to continue his career with Bellator, where he went 2-3 in fights against fellow legends Fedor Emilianenko, Quinton Jackson, Wanderlei Silva, Tito Ortiz and Lyoto Machida.

Masvidal himself responded to Sonnen’s earlier call by stating that he would offer the biggest payday Sonnen had ever seen, and that he would hit him with his right hand tied behind his back.

Unsurprisingly, Sonnen had a stern but humorous response to such a suggestion:

“I will fight Masvidal now, he can use his right hand, he can kick me in the balls, he can do anything he wants (because) I will be excited and I will beat Jorge Masvidal at any time… But I will do not. take Nate’s fight, and this is exactly what I told them – word for word.

Sonnen previously wrote ‘poems’ for ‘pet idiot’ Jorge Masvidal

Although Sonnen stated that he would never deprive Nate Diaz of such an opportunity, the fan-favorite fighter turned expert continues to enjoy working with Jorge Masvidal, or at least getting under Gamebred’s skin.

Not until April, Sonnen shared a series of posts in which he wrote a haiku poem for Masvidal, calling the former BMF title holder his “pet idiot” before hilariously asking readers to “please add your own mental soundscape of gong and waterfall.”

The poem is split into multiple messages and reads:

The moon hangs bright;
An old fighter sleeps outside.
Sonnen broke his thoughts.
Masvidumb looks
The penlight is difficult to follow!
EMT shakes his head.
Punk. Drunk. It smells like Skunk.
Diaz fooled him
He chose unwisely.
Picnic chair, dirt floor.
Shoplifting, rusty, clippers.
Hairstyle of regret
Oxygen cannula
Strapped to a stretcher; only
While Nate smokes coolant
Monkey snatches plum
Nate hits him like a drum
Jorge Masvidal is stupid.
