MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas rookie opposite Spiker Sherwin Umandal will get a chance to fulfill the dream of his brother and former Golden Spiker Jau with his first finals appearance in the UAAP Season 86 Men’s Volleyball Tournament.

One of men’s volleyball’s biggest stars, Jau may not have reached the UAAP finals in his three seasons at UST, but he couldn’t be prouder and happier for his younger brother Sherwin, who helped the Golden Spikers become the first No. 4 seed. team to reach the volleyball final.

“As his great burden, I am proud of his achievements because in my time we have not reached the final,” the Cignal HD Spikers star told Inquirer Sports. But in any case it is my brother’s turn to be in the final with UST.”

The younger Umandal carried out the crucial attacks, finishing with 16 points and seven points as UST defeated twice-beating No. 1 Far Eastern University, 25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 26-24, to register its second straight trip to the finals on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Hours after his brother’s triumph, Jau stopped Bryan Bagunas with 15 points, putting Cignal on the verge of ruling the 2024 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference after beating Criss Cross in Game 1 with a 27-25, 23-25, 25 -21, 25 -19 win over Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Philippine men’s volleyball team is proud of Sherwin’s growth under his college coach Odjie Mamon.

“I am proud of his performance and the way he is fighting for UST,” the elder Umandal said.

For his part, Sherwin is happy that he is living the dream of playing for UST by watching Jau during his playing years. His older brother was with the team from 2018 to 2020, where he only reached the Final Four in his freshman year.

“I started dreaming of playing for UST when Kuya played for them. Now I got the chance to play for UST too and we are in the final. I am very happy,” said the rookie to Spiker, who spelled the difference in the Final Four to complete the difficult task of winning twice.

The young UST offers Jau his upcoming first Finals stint, hoping he can fulfill his older brother’s dream of bringing glory to the school and repaying his full support every match.

“Every match he always fails to send me a message: ‘Congratulations!’ Ang galing mo (Congratulations brother, you did well!)!” and before the match,laruin mo lang yung laro mo and ipakita mo lang yung dapat mong laro (just play your game),” Sherwin said.

Sherwin could be the x-factor for UST in the upcoming finals series against National University, who their team has not defeated this season.
