Breakout receiver may be released soon

Current Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice could soon be released this offseason. Rice is a suspect in an alleged attack that injured a man at a Dallas nightclub, according to the Dallas Morning News. It’s the latest offseason trouble for the SMU product, who has emerged as a wide receiver for the Super Bowl champions. This comes after his arrest for involvement in a six-car crash in Dallas in March that injured at least seven people.

The former second-rounder is already facing multiple charges from that car accident, so it appears this recent incident could be enough for the Chiefs to move on. Rice’s attorney and the Chiefs have no comment at this time. Rice is already facing a multi-game suspension, so the problems are only piling up. It appears the Chiefs have taken the logical step of selecting Texas’ Xavier Worthy in this year’s draft as his potential replacement.

However, the Chiefs have patience with the SMU product, but that can always wear thin. It appears that if the NFL decides to suspend him for one season, they could release him. Head Coach Andy Reid said he is letting police handle the situation and they will revisit to see what his future with the team holds. However, one wonders how long this will last before the team finally wants to play the waiting game.

It looked like the Chiefs would be without a receiver this season. The team was also able to acquire Marquise Brown on a one-year veteran relief deal. It appears the opinions and talking heads wanting the Chiefs to cut Rice are coming sooner than expected.

The release may be coming soon

The sentence of his release does not come close to what awaits him in real life. Rice could be facing jail time, so it’s hard to imagine the Chiefs parting with him. He has every right to defend his actions, but the case does not look promising from his side. It makes you wonder if his on-field talent can mask the amount of off-field issues he’s faced this season.

The Chiefs are already investing so much in the SMU product, especially after an explosive rookie season. During his rookie year, he managed 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, while adding more yards during their playoffs this season. Kansas City probably wouldn’t have made it to a second consecutive Super Bowl without his contributions. That’s why the team saw potential in the SMU product by selecting him with the second pick in last year’s draft.

However, Worthy will likely need a year to adjust to the NFL landscape, but they have Marquise Brown. They have other weapons like Travis Kelce and Kadarius Toney that Patrick Mahomes can use. The Chiefs may need another experienced addition to be a reliable weapon while Worthy adapts and can work alongside Brown. Here are some late-minute wide receivers the Chiefs could add.

Potential wide receiver free agents

There were rumors that Tyler Boyd could sign with the team, but he just signed with the Titans this week. This makes the receiver market scarce after Odell Beckham Jr. agreed to a deal with the Miami Dolphins. However, guys like Michael Thomas and Zay Jones are still available. The Chiefs don’t have a huge need for it, but one drastic injury could leave the receiving corps in shambles.

The team can’t afford a trade for Tee Higgins, Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel, so a cheap signing would make sense.
