Black Bears upset Bryant in First Day of America East tournament

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine softball team defeated third-seeded Bryant 9-7 in eight innings on the first day of the 2024 America East Softball Championship on Wednesday afternoon at the UMaine Softball Complex.

With the win, sixth-seeded Maine advances to play second-seeded Binghamton tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.

How it happened

  • The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the first and then pushed it to 3-0 in the second.
  • The teams then played three scoreless innings.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, Gabby Papuska walked and Anna Margetis was hit by a pitch and set up a three-run home run Caitlyn Fallon.
  • An inning later, the Black Bears moved four runs over… Kyrah Haba-Dailey hit a lead-off double and scored on a Kyli Hernández single … Papushka’s bunt single scored Hernandez … a sacrifice fly by Margetis and an error gave Maine a 7-3 lead.
  • The Bulldogs responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
  • Haba-Dailey, Krista Francia and Papushka walked to load the bases in the top of the eighth inning…Haba-Dailey and Papushka scored when Margetis forced Bryant into a throwing error.

Game notes

  • Kyrah Haba-Dailey finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
  • Rylee Kent went 3-for-4 with a double and Krista Francia went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
  • Gabby Papuska went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks.
  • Caitlyn Fallon went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run.
  • Fallon started in the circle, went 7.0 innings, gave up seven runs, walked seven and struck out one… she threw 158 pitches… Isabelle True pitched 1.0 innings in scoreless, hitless relief and picked up the save.
