Dunning delivers, defeats Syracuse in ACC Championship Opener

DURHAM, NC— Ninth-seeded Boston College defeated eighth-seeded Syracuse in a pitchers’ duel and scored one run in a 1-0 victory over Syracuse in the opening game of the ACC Softball Championship at Duke Softball Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The win moved the Eagles to 30-23 on the season and set up their match tomorrow against fourth- and first-seeded Duke as a winner-moves-on contest for Friday’s semifinals.

Junior right-handed pitcher Abby Dunning started in the circle for the Eagles and threw all seven innings, retired four batters and allowed two hits. Dunning had an impeccable game with a no-hitter through four innings, allowing a ‘Cuse hit in the fifth inning followed by a strikeout. Abby dealt 110 pitches with 72 strikes in seven innings of work.

The Eagles got on the board in the fourth, at the top of the standings, Hanna Slike hit a double to left center. Nicole Giery followed suit and hit her 19th double of the season, an RBI double through the left line, putting BC up 1-0.

This will be the Eagles’ first appearance in the quarterfinals since 2008, the last time BC advanced to the second round, the Eagles defeated Florida State before falling to Maryland.

Boston College plays one-see Duke Thursday at 11 a.m. on ACC Network with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
