Italian Open 2024 Day 1 Recap

Main draw action at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia 2024 got underway on Wednesday and it was a solid day for the homegrown talent, with Luciano Darderi and Flavio Cobolli booking their places in the second round.

More Italians were due to appear on the field later in the day, but rain disrupted play twice. The first delay occurred in the late afternoon, and although the players returned to the field early in the evening, it only lasted an hour before showers began and play was suspended for the day.

The weather had a major influence on Francesco Passaro’s match against Arthur Rinderknech. He had recovered from 3–5 down in the second set before play was stopped as the qualifier was about to serve for the set at 6–5.

Outside of the game, Matteo Berrettini withdrew from the event after stating that his body was not ready for high-intensity play.

Will it ever be so? He has missed Madrid and Rome three years in a row and seems to have one of those body types that break down all too easily. He will be replaced in the draw by lucky loser JJ Wolf.

Below you can see the results from day one.

Darderi makes home fans happy

Luciano Darderi came through a grueling three-hour match on the Central court to narrowly beat Denis Shapovalov 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (4).

The match was filled with dramatic shifts and Shapovalov nearly took the win while serving at 5-4 in the third set.

However, Darderi, backed by the partisan albeit sparse crowd, showed tenacity and mental strength and came from behind to secure the victory.

The story of the tape was what you would expect in a game with a flashy shot maker like Shapo. Darderi achieved victory with consistent and solid play, especially during crucial points, and outperformed Shapovalov, who, despite a high tempo with explosive winners, made too many mistakes with low-percentage plays.

After splitting the first two sets, the third set showed Shapovalov’s flair with some spectacular moves to recover from a 2-4 deficit. However, after winning three games in a row, he failed to serve out the match at 5-4 and was unable to convert two break points at 5-5.

The match culminated in a tiebreak and Darderi, who appeared to be suffering from a leg injury, took control. He maintained the minibreak he deserved at 3-3 and took victory on his first match point after Shapovalov failed badly after a short ball.

Cobolli makes a strong start: A great 6-4, 6-2 victory for the Italian over Maxime Marterer in an hour and sixteen minutes.

Monteiro passes Monfils: The Frenchman prefers faster surfaces as he enters the twilight of his career, and Monteiro was too solid: 6-2, 7-5.

Vukic evaporates Schwartzman: 6-2 6-2 for the Australian to eliminate qualifier Schwartzman, who plans to retire in Buenos Aires next year.
