‘True club legend’ is calling time on his career after 16 seasons at Petone

Central League club Petone have announced the retirement of former player Alex Shepherd-Reynolds, who has been a mainstay of the club’s top senior teams since 2008.

Shepherd-Reynolds (33), from ‘ASR’ as he is known at the club, played his last match on Saturday 4 May 2024, scoring a hat-trick as an overage player in Petone U-20s’ 3-1 win against North Wellington.

Alex Shepherd-Reynolds… ‘Petone legend.’

As captain of this side, he compiled his hat-trick in a 13-minute spell before being substituted three minutes later.

The match was a fitting finale for a player who made more than 100 appearances for Petone’s first team, scoring 32 goals.

His last appearance in the Central League came in April 2022, when he faced Wellington Phoenix Reserves packed with players who are now competing in the semi-finals of the A-League.

In their social media tribute to Shepherd-Reynolds, Petone said: “He was part of the 2019 squad that won the Capital Premier League and were promoted back to the Central League.

“Alex has played 88 games for our Men’s Reserves/U-2323s team and scored 28 goals.

“He recently co-captained consecutive league titles and promotions (Capital 2 in 2022 and Capital 1 in 2023).

“He also has a lot of appearances for our men’s third team.

“Alex was also part of our only men’s team that won the National Youth Tournament in 2008.

“A real club legend.”
