New Delhi: Mumbai Indians became the first team to be eliminated from the race to the 2024 Indian Premier League play-offs after Sunrisers Hyderabad dismantled Lucknow Super Giants by 10 wickets on Wednesday. Chasing 166 for a win, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma launched a brutal attack on the LSG bowlers, completing the chase in just 9.4 overs.

SRH’s win in Hyderabad sees them occupy the third spot with 14 points in their kitty, just behind Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals who have 16 points each. With a match between Delhi Capitals and LSG scheduled on May 14, one of those teams will get at least 13 points and the maximum MI they can achieve if they secure wins in all their upcoming matches is 12 points. This drops the Hardik Pandya-led team out of the top four.

MI’s poor performance in IPL 2024

Mumbai Indians started their IPL campaign poorly, with three consecutive defeats under new captain Hardik Pandya, who replaced Rohit Sharma for the 17th edition of the competition. However, the five-time winners bounced back by winning three of their next four meetings, giving them and their fans some hope of a comeback.

But the happiness was short-lived for the side as they suffered a string of four straight losses, which damaged their chances of qualifying for the play-offs and on Wednesday MI became the first team to be officially eliminated from the IPL.
